Kitchen makeovers: Updating your kitchen
Kitchens need to be functional workspaces that allow you adequate space for food preparation and utensil storage so if your kitchen falls down in any of these areas a makeover is probably the answer.
A kitchen revamp is never a bad idea as it is a good investment in your home and will be money well spent. Look at upgrading your appliances too, as well as your benches and cabinets, if they are looking a bit tired or don't quite function as they should.
Updating your kitchen? What to consider
If working in your kitchen has become more of a chore due to its outdated design then you're ready for an update but before you start you should look at where your kitchen is letting you down and consider the best ways to fix it. Some important areas to look at are
- Storage space for utensils and appliances
- Bench space - is it adequate?
- Lighting
- Power points - are there enough of them?
- Is the general layout a practical one?
You spend a lot of time in your kitchen so you need one that will work well for you.
When should you update your kitchen?
If you find that you just don't seem to have enough bench area, there's not enough cupboard space, lack of storage for your utensils and the entire room is just too dark and pokey, you can consider it time to overhaul your kitchen. Even if your budget is a bit tight there are several options for modernising your kitchen.
Sometimes just a change of colour and some good lighting can make your kitchen look like new. Add a new bench top and the change can be quite dramatic!
If the whole kitchen needs to start again from scratch consider talking to a consultant about a practical design. Kitchen manufacturers can be really helpful here. Next, look at the choice of either using a professional kitchen fitter or whether you want to install it yourself. Kitchen cabinetry can be supplied in flat pack units, modular units or they can be custom built from the floor up.
Kitchen updating: DIY?
If you are a competent handyperson with a good working knowledge of building and cabinetry then by all means go for it and do your kitchen revamp yourself but if not, you really would be best to leave it to the professionals.
