Window coverings in the kitchen are not only important for aesthetics, they are also functional. Choosing the right blinds means finding ones that not only complement the rest of your kitchen decor, but that let in the kind of light you need and are safe. There are a variety of styles and materials to choose from, each with advantages in different kitchens.

Types of kitchen blinds

Blinds that are suitable for kitchens come in a variety of styles:

  • Roller blinds are usually heavy duty material or vinyl sheets that roll up to the top of the window
  • Roman style blinds are also material or vinyl, but are drawn up on strings into folds that hang from the top of the window. Austrian are similar, but hang in a scallop pattern
  • Cloud and balloon blinds are, like Roman ones, gathered up by an arrangement of cord and rings at the back. They have a scalloped "ballooned" look when raised or partially raised
  • Slat blinds can be constructed of wood or "quill" - white plastic. These are common in kitchens as they are easy to clean. Honeycomb blinds are similar, but have a honeycomb shape when raised, and are even easier to care for
  • Cane blinds are constructed from sticks of split cane. They look great, but tend to get dusty
  • Venetian blinds were popular in the past, and with the retro look are regaining popularity. They are two inch wide slats held together with tape, and are usually white plastic, although they can also be constructed of wood slats
  • Vertical blinds, or vertical louvres are long slats made of wood, silk, canvas or synthetic, and held together at the top and bottom in a track
  • Paper blinds are made from pleated stiffened paper, and are generally inexpensive to buy. Balastores and Pleatex are other types of treated paper blinds
  • Mini blinds are the same design as Venetians only, unsurprisingly, have smaller slat width
  • Other blind types include Pinoleum, made from thin sticks of wood, and cottage blinds, which cover half the window

Choosing the right kitchen blinds

The choice of the most appropriate blinds to suit your kitchen depends on a number of factors.

  • Safety is paramount. If your kitchen window is near cooking implements choose non flammable blinds such as metal venetians, as wind can blow blinds into the room
  • Aesthetics are also important. Choose blinds that fit with the other materials and colours in your kitchen
  • Your new kitchen blinds should also let in the amount of light you need while creating privacy
  • Choose materials like wood or aluminium for longevity
  • Budget constraints make paper or bamboo blinds a great choice

Take into account your budget, safety, lighting needs, aesthetics and longevity when choosing blinds.

How to choose your kitchen blinds

Choosing the right blinds for your kitchen is a simple matter of deciding what your budget is, considering the safety angle, and choosing from the vast array of fantastic alternatives. The right blinds will make your kitchen a more enjoyable and practical place to spend time in.
