DIY kitchen sink installations
As with any Do It Yourself projects, one of the first things you need to ensure is that you have everything you are going to need before you start the actual job and if a kitchen sink installation is going to be your new project, make sure that you do your homework first.
Steps to installing your new kitchen sink
Once you are familiar with the steps involved and the type of tools you'll need for the job, you can begin the process of installing your kitchen sink yourself but all the same, you should
- Assess your handyman knowledge and skills level
- Enrol in a DIY workshop or get a good manual on how to install kitchen sinks
- Talk to a tradesman and get some tips for the job
Basically though, the bottom line with Do It Yourself sink installations is Don't do it yourself! It is highly recommended that you use a qualified plumber for this job because it needs to be done correctly the first time around.
Actually, it is as important to use a plumber for this job as it is to use and electrician for any electrical work.
DIY kitchen sink installation
If you still decide to install your kitchen sink yourself, be sure to check the position of your waste pipe and be sure that it lines up exactly with the sink waste. Also make certain the pipe is not going to be too long in relation to the depth of your new sink. A wast that sits only slightly higher than it should will not allow the water to drain completely and you'll always have a puddle in your sink.
Also check for leaks. These won't be evident until you have completed the job so test for leaks as soon as you have finished the installation and deal with any straight away.
Use good quality adhesives and sealing agents for where your sink meets the bench. There are several good brands on the market but consult with your retailer before buying the first product you see. Make sure you allow the full time for the glues and sealants to cure too. This is very important so read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly. Most importantly though, if you find you are a bit out of your depth contact a good plumber. It will be worth the cost to know your new kitchen sink has been installed correctly.
